| What is Pilates?
Pilates - A body conditioning system created over eighty years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. Initially popular with dancers and other performers, the Pilates method has become popular in the fitness world. Exercises performed on the floor, or on specialized equipment, Pilates coordinates mind, body and breath to develop sleek and functionally strong abdominal muscles, a strong and supple back, and aligns the shoulder girdle.

Pilates is a system of movement and exercise created and developed in the early 1900's by German-born athlete and physical therapy pioneer, Joseph Hubertus Pilates. Using specially designed equipment, the Pilates Method dramatically improves strength, flexibility, coordination and posture. The Pilates Method shapes bodies. It slims the muscles and makes them more compact, developing sleekness rather than bulk.
The Pilates Method incorporates Eastern and Western philosophies of physical and mental conditioning. This creates a fusion of mind, body and spirit functioning perfectly as a coordinated whole. People who consistently use the Pilates Method discover that, without conscious effort, they improve their posture, move more gracefully, sleep better, and develop firmer, sleeker and more powerful muscles.
Build Strength, Flexibility & Coordination
Pilates focuses on firming and strengthening your "core" muscles- the abdominals, gluteals, and lower-back so that the rest of your body learns to move with more ease. A properly developed core can also mean less fatigue and lowered incidence of back pain and injury.
For more than 50 years, the Pilates Method has been used by professional dancers, Hollywood celebrities and top models. Today, it is used internationally by;
- Individuals at all levels of fitness looking for a new physical challenge
- Top athletes to develop core strength and coordination and to prevent injury
- People rehabilitating from chronic pain or injury
- Business professionals to relieve stress
The Pilates Method is a total body workout
The Pilates workout is based on varied spring-loaded resistance, rather than weights. Instead of simply conditioning specific body parts, Pilates trains the whole body by coordinating the upper and lower musculature with the body's centre.
For maximum results, we suggest 2-3 one-hour sessions per week using exercises on the mat and Pilates equipment such as the reformer, wunda chair, barrels and Cadillac. Conditioning sessions are conducted one-to-one with a teacher, or in closely supervised small groups. Each session is tailored to your specific needs. You can expect to feel a noticeable difference in your movement patterns in about 8-10 sessions, although results may vary.
